Writers in God's Service

Writing, then, can be viewed as a sacrament
insofar as it provides graced occasions of
encounter between humanity and God.

WinGS is a group of Christian writers committed to motivate, inspire and encourage one another in exercising the creative gift of "wordhandling." Our members have been published in diverse genres: inspirational and devotional collections, poetry, societal issues, and there are a number of fictional works in progress. We do much of our discussion and consultation online, and would love to have you join us.

Send me your favorite "pet peeve" words, and let's discuss how to substitute more creative words.

Example: FUN (and it's usually preceded by "really" which doubles the irritation).

That's a really fun website with lots of really fun things to do. We had a really fun trip. It was a really fun resort.

Couldn't we say: I've bookmarked that outstanding website. It has creative (challenging, exciting, entertaining, amusing, educational) things (projects, activities, games) to offer.

Now, send me yours and let's compare notes.

I know, I know! "Fun" can be used as an adjective--I looked it up. I've even used it on occasion. But I still prefer to find a more descriptive adjective.

Pet peeve words from our feedback:

AWESOME...Overused. Everything is "awesome." J.P., Illinois

LOVE...I LOVE chocolate, LOVE my puppy, LOVE your dress...car...(fill in the blanks) Oh, and by the way I LOVE God! P.C., California

JUST...Especially in public prayer: Lord, we JUST want to praise You; we JUST ask that You... C.R.L. California

LIKE used inappropriately as in: I was LIKE how could that LIKE happen to me? LIKE I was totally LIKE blown away. A. vd E., California

But don't you all JUST LOVE my REALLY FUN, AWESOME website?

D.K. of California joins the discussion with a variant of my distaste for the word FUN used as an adjective.  She rankles at the non-word FUNNEST, also used as an adjective:  fun, funner, funnest!
Right on, D.K.!!!
